Ice festival in Khovsgol

March 2 @ 8:00 am - March 4 @ 5:00 pm

Ice Festival

The Ice Festival takes place every year in late February or early March on the frozen Lake Khuvsgul and lasts two days.

Competitions include:

  • Sleigh racing,
  • Tug of war,
  • Speed skating,
  • Sumo wrestling
  • Ice fishing
  • Musical and shamanic performances.

Beautiful ice sculptures are being carved, you can watch them. On the second day there is a final bonfire. Small Gers with snacks, so-called Guanz, complete the unique experience.

Locals sell souvenirs laid out on blankets during the festival, such as felt goods, reindeer and yak bone accessories, wooden-carved spoons and deels, the Mongolian cloaks.

A tip for warm feet: If you want to visit the festival, you should avoid conventional snowshoes from the outdoor shop, you quickly get very cold feet in them. Boots lined with lambskin or felt boots are better, which you can get in Ulan Bator before heading north. In it you keep the icy cold and the wind on the frozen lake
