The Gorkhi Terelj National Park can be reached from Ulan Bator in about an hour’s drive. The protected area, also known as the Gorkhi Terelj National Park, is located approximately 50 kilometers east of the capital. The region is part of the Khentii Mountains, which extend as far as the Russian border in the northeast. A visit is especially recommended for travelers who only have a few days available. You can take beautiful walks and horse rides in this great landscape. The Tuul River is suitable for swimming and canoeing. Forests, granite mountains, and unusual rock formations offer unique impressions of nature.

Activities

Many residents of Ulan Bator use the park as a recreation area. During the summer season, many locals flock to this park to enjoy various activities like barbecues on the river or playing volleyball amidst the lush green floodplain forests.

To enter the park, visitors must cross the bridge over the Tuul River and pay an entrance fee of 1000 MNT per person and 3000 MNT for a vehicle. Once inside the park, visitors can find nomads who offer horseback riding services and act as guides. The cost of renting a horse is around 10,000 MNT per hour.

Turtle Rock

One of the most popular attractions in Terelj National Park is the Turtle Rock, a massive granite rock formation that resembles a turtle. Visitors can hike the trail behind the rock to witness the Cretaceous period’s natural wonders. For visitors who want to stay overnight in the park, there are several accommodation options available.
