Mongolia’s State Naadam Festival is a remarkable cultural event that draws thousands of tourists to witness its vibrant display of traditional sports, music, and food. For those seeking an affordable tour of this grand spectacle, we offer a carefully crafted itinerary that will take you through the festival’s highlights and beyond.
Day 1. Arrival day.
On the first day, you’ll arrive in Ulaanbaatar and transfer to your hotel for some rest. Later, we’ll embark on a city tour that includes Sukhbaatar Square, the National Historical Museum, Gandan Monastery, and Bogd Khan’s Winter Palace Museum. In the evening, you’ll enjoy a traditional folk concert before retiring for the night.
Day 2. First day of the Naadam.
The second day marks the opening of the State Naadam festival, and we’ll head to the central stadium early in the morning to catch the opening ceremony at 11 am. Mongolian National Wrestling will follow the concert, while other events such as archery and ankle bone shooting will take place outside the stadium. You’ll also get to taste huushuur, a local delicacy, from one of the many gers set up around the stadium. Overnight in hotel.
Day 3. Second Day of the Naadam. Elsen Tasarkhai.
Head to the Hui Doloon Hudag to witness the Ikh Nas horse race finish line. After lunch, we’ll make our way to Elsen Tasarkhai and set up camp in Bayan-Gobi for the night.
Day 4. Kharkhorin
On the way to Kharkhorin, we’ll visit the Temple of Erdem Khamba and ride horses or camels in the sand dunes. We’ll then visit the historic Erdene-Zuu Monastery and other nearby attractions before retiring to our camp for the night.
Day 5. Hustai National Park.
Travel to Hustai National Park to see wild horses. We’ll stay at a tourist camp at the gate and enter the park in the evening to witness the horses coming down to the water.
Day 6. Ulaanbaatar
Head back to Ulaanbaatar, where we’ll visit the Choijin Lama Temple Museum and the Zaisan Hill Memorial Statue. We’ll end the day with some shopping for souvenirs and cashmere before returning to our hotel for the night.
Day 7. Departure
Finally, on day seven, you’ll depart from Ulaanbaatar with memories that will last a lifetime.
