Takhi Conservation Project
In addition to the Hustai National Park, around 100 kilometers from Ulan Bator, the Takhiyn Tal is another area that has become a new home for the Takhi horses. The International Takhi Group, based in Switzerland, has set itself the goal of scientifically protecting the 9,000 square kilometer wild horse habitat. The Takhiyn Valley is located in the northeast corner of the Great Gobi B protected area.
There are six important water points that do not dry out the year. Since water is essential for the survival of the Takhi horses, with the support of the International Takhi Group and with the funding from the Mongolian government. Another water point was built with solar-powered technology to prevent the coming and going animals documented for scientific purposes. There is a professional park management and seven rangers sufficient presence to maintain the nature reserve.
Conservation Project
The National Park House serves as a central point of contact for protection, research, and, if necessary, also for the few visitors to the area. Here, the nature reserve extends to Chinese territory, where it is also designated as a national park. The International Takhi Group recently announced on its website that 2014 was a very successful year in order to build a long-term viable population. The herds have grown properly. Three new mares that have been reintroduced from Prague Zoo and 22 small foals are now walking through the reserve.
In the Takhiyn Tal, there is an oasis called Khonin Us, with a little luck the very shy Takhi can be seen drinking there or in other water points in the late evening or early morning. The area is extremely remote and difficult to reach. You shouldn’t be there without a guide who is very familiar with the local conditions and whom the park administration of Gobi B is happy to arrange.
