D. Sukhbaatar statue and square commemorate the contributions of D. Sukhbaatar, one of the prominent leaders of the Mongolian People’s Revolution. Following his demise in 1923, the site that currently houses the square was named in his honor. The location is a memorial site that marks the entry of the Mongolian partisan army into Ikh Khuree (The Capital City) from Khiagt, signaling the triumph of the People’s Revolution. In 1946, to mark the 25th anniversary of the victory of the People’s Revolution, a statue of  Sukhbaatar was erected on the square. The statue depicts the general riding on a horse, pointing towards the rising sun.

The statue was created according to the original model designed by the sculptor D. Choimbol. The statue stands at a height of 4 meters, while the base underneath it is 8 meters high. The front of the monument bears the words of the general, “Our country unites its opinions and joins together a common force, and at the same time dares to move, there is no place that cannot be reached and we cannot know, and only the courage of our hearts know that we can find the leader of happiness.”.

Surrounding the statue are stone lions with thick chain links, symbolizing the idea that “Mongolia is inviolable.” At the national holiday, leaders of the government pay homage to the statue by laying flowers on it. The statue, which is 65 years old, was renovated into a bronze statue in 2011, in anticipation of the 90th anniversary of the victory of the People’s Revolution.
