The Chinggis Khaan Museum is an impressive new museum that is sure to amaze visitors. With its large, open halls and modern technology, it stands out as a world-class facility. This museum is designed to showcase over 11,000 fascinating historical and commemorative items, making it a must-visit for both locals and international tourists.
The idea to create the Chinggis Khaan Museum came about in July 2019, thanks to the effort of Mongolia’s current president, U. Khurelsukh. Since then, over three years have passed, during which the museum’s main concept has been developed, its layout designed, and various stages of organization completed.
This museum is seven times bigger than the Mongolian National Museum, all on one floor. Its exhibits are uniquely presented with descriptions in both Mongolian and Cyrillic scripts, using laser light for the first time. Visitors can scan QR codes to read and listen to explanations in five different languages, which makes it accessible to everyone.
Exhibitions
Inside, you can find extraordinary artifacts, including items from the time of Chinggis Khaan, the legendary conqueror. Among the highlights are rare displays that have never been seen before, such as the Chinggis Khaan Stone Letters from the Hermitage Museum in Russia and a golden gerege from a Japanese university. There’s also a unique painting that depicts Khubilai Khaan’s campaigns, which is a copy that was painstakingly produced and brought to Mongolia with special permission.
The museum also features 368 ancient seals from various regions of Mongolia displayed on a wall, alongside a massive 20-ton replica of the Rashaan rock, which is significant in Mongolian history. Visitors can see a wide range of stunning exhibits, including clothing, jewelry, armor, and religious offerings used by Chinggis Khaan’s royal family. One standout feature is the artworks created by Undur Gegeen Zanabazar, a notable artist related to Chinggis Khaan.

The Chinggis Khaan Museum highlights the history of the Mongol Empire, beginning with the Huns, who founded the first state, all the way to the Great Mongol Empire, the Yuan Dynasty, and the prominent figures of Chinggis Khaan’s family. The exhibits include a wide range of artifacts from various locations, such as museums, universities, and cultural heritage centers in Ulaanbaatar.
This museum is unique in that it thoroughly represents the history of nomadic life and is recognized as the largest of its kind in Asia. An impressive 93 percent of the items on display are original artifacts, meaning they are not just replicas. The remaining portion has been carefully restored using modern techniques; specifically, about 5.2 percent of the total 100,423 items have been enhanced to preserve their historical value.
