Buddha Park is a peaceful and important place that opened in 2006. It is located on the lower western slopes of Zaisan Tolgoi. This remarkable site was made possible through the generous funding from South Korea and the dedicated efforts of the non-governmental organization “Lianhua.”
At the heart of the park stands an impressive 23-meter-high statue of Buddha, masterfully crafted by skilled Korean Buddhist sculptors. This statue is not simply a work of art; it is a symbol of hope and tranquility. The body of the Buddha is constructed from a unique glutinous material known as Ulight, which was specially imported from Korea. This innovative material is renowned for its durability, claiming a remarkable lifespan of 500 years against the elements of sun, wind, and water. It is interesting to note that Ulight is also used in shipbuilding, particularly for making the bottoms of boats, highlighting its strength and resilience.
The origins of the park can be traced back to the vision of Gurdwara Renbuche, who initiated the project with the aim of creating a sacred space for reflection and contemplation. Once the statue was completed, he performed a ritual that is essential in Buddhist tradition—the ritual of giving life to the statue. This is a symbolic act that embodies the deep connection between the statue and the spiritual intentions of the community.
The design of the statue is particularly meaningful; the Buddha’s eyes are oriented towards the bustling city of Ulaanbaatar. This positioning symbolizes a watchful guardianship, representing the Buddha’s role in overseeing and protecting the inhabitants of the city. It conveys a sense of reassurance to both residents and visitors alike.
In addition to the majestic statue, Buddha Park is designed to be a place of peace and tranquility. To enhance the spiritual atmosphere, the park features a beautifully crafted bell, which symbolizes peace, as well as a tambourine intended to call upon the gods of heaven and earth for protection. These elements invite individuals from all walks of life—city dwellers and international tourists alike—to enter a space where they can purify their minds, reflect on their thoughts, and seek inner peace amidst the chaos of urban life.
