Uurtiin Tokhoi – The Legendary Cliff of the Orkhon River
Uurtiin Tokhoi is a striking bend of the Orkhon River, known for its deep cliff and dramatic rocky walls. Located just 4 km east of the Temen Chuluun mouth, this scenic viewpoint rises 1,630 meters above sea level. Nearby, a naturally sour, carbon-rich cold spring is believed by locals to support healing for various internal ailments. The area’s rugged beauty and peaceful atmosphere make it a memorable stop for travelers exploring central Mongolia.
Legends Behind the Name
Many captivating stories surround Uurtiin Tokhoi. One of the most famous legends tells of Galdan Boshigt Khan, who traveled toward the Tuvkhon Monastery in search of Saint Zanabazar. During his journey, the Orkhon River suddenly flooded, sweeping away many of his soldiers. Their bodies were buried in the gorge, and over time the site came to be known as Uurtiin Tokhoi, a name linked to both tragedy and enduring history.
According to local tradition, Saint Zanabazar later bestowed the title “Tushee Gun” upon the Orkhon River and ordered annual devotion at the Orkhon Falls with one hundred million lan of silver. Locals believe the river, and especially the sacred site of Uurtiin Tokhoi, has long offered protection, spiritual support, and healing to the surrounding communities.
