Ugii Lake is a picturesque lake located in the Ugii Nuur Soum area of Arkhangai Province, Mongolia. The lake is about 25 km square in size and is situated at an altitude of 1337 meters above sea level. The lake is fed by the water of old Orkhon from the west and flows into the Orkhon River from the Khooloi River in the northwest. It is approximately 7 km long, 5 km wide, and about 15 m at its deepest point. The lake belongs to the Arctic Ocean basin and has an ice cover from November to May.
Best Place for Fishing
The researchers have determined that the lake has 14 species of fish, including red-eye, pike, roach, perch, gourd, silver carp, and pike. Additionally, there are 27 species of floating plants and 48 species of floating animals in the Orkhon River basin.
Ugii Lake is not only a heaven for fish and other aquatic creatures but also a paradise for bird lovers. The lake is home to about 150 species of water birds, including rare birds such as the beaked goose and the spoonbill, which come to roost here. It has been duly registered within the international network that safeguards the interests of avifauna belonging to the Northeast Asian goose and duck family.
Enchanting Tourist Camps
The lake is frozen during the winter months, but in summertime, it attracts photographers and bird watchers from all over the world. The lake shore is dotted with several tourist camps, including Khatan Ugii and Sky Land, where visitors can rent a boat and fish on the lake. The basic fishery in the lake includes pike, perch, and burbot, and it is possible to catch more than 1 meter of pike.
In recognition of its ecological significance. In 1971, Ugii Lake was enlisted in the Ramsar Convention during an international gathering aimed at safeguarding the wetland ecosystem of the lake. The convention seeks to preserve and sustainably utilize wetlands of international importance by promoting wise use and conservation practices.
