SUMMARY:Sagsai Golden Golden Eagle Festival
DESCRIPTION:Sagsai Golden Eagle Festival in Western Mongolia: A Unique Cultural Experience\nEvery year\, on the first weekend of September\, the Sagsai Golden Eagle Festival draws visitors to western Mongolia. The event takes place in Sagsai. Skilled eagle hunters\, known as berkuchi\, gather to compete and celebrate their heritage. The festival begins with a colorful parade through Ölgii. Hunters display their traditional clothing\, trained eagles\, and decorated horses. After the parade\, the event moves to the open fairgrounds\, where the main competitions begin. \nIt has already become one of the most popular tourist festivals in Bayan-Ölgii\, with many tour operators organizing Eagle Festival Tours to align with the event. \nFirst Discipline: Appearance and Presentation\nJudges evaluate the overall appearance of the hunter\, eagle\, and horse. Each team rides past the jury to present their style and harmony. Hunters show beautifully decorated saddles and well-groomed horses. They also wear traditional clothing that reflects their culture. The eagle must look strong and healthy. Judges award up to ten points. However\, scores above nine remain rare. \nSecond Discipline: Eagle and Hunter Connection\nThis stage tests the bond between the hunter and the eagle. The berkuchi rides to a flag and leaves the eagle there. He then rides away to a set distance. Next\, the hunter calls the eagle. The bird must return quickly and land safely on its owner. Judges focus on speed\, accuracy\, and control. This discipline highlights trust and training between the eagle and the hunter. \nThird Discipline: Simulated Hunting\nThe final test recreates a real hunting situation. Assistants place the eagle on a mountain and cover its eyes with a leather hood. The hunter rides away with a fox lure. Once he reaches the required distance\, the assistant removes the hood. The hunter calls the eagle to attack. The eagle flies low and fast\, using natural hunting skills. It must catch the moving target quickly. Judges score the reaction time and hunting ability. They also evaluate how fast the hunter reaches the eagle. This exciting event often becomes the highlight of the Sagsai Golden Eagle Festival. \nWinners\, Honor\, and Traditions\nJudges combine scores from all three disciplines to select the winner. The champion earns respect and honor within the community. Prize money remains small. Most hunters compete for pride\, not profit. Families celebrate the winner’s success with great pride. \nMore Than a Competition\nThe Sagsai Golden Eagle Festival also includes archery contests and horse races. Both men and women take part in these traditional sports. Visitors enjoy a rich cultural experience. The festival offers a rare look into the nomadic lifestyle of Mongolia. It also shows the deep bond between humans and golden eagles.
