The freshwater lake Khar Us – translated means black water lake. It is located about 30 kilometers east of Khovd and is fed by the river Khovd. The landscape consists of desert steppes as far as the eye can see. You rarely meet animals and hardly any plants grow. To visit the nature reserve around the lakes, you need to get permission in Khovd. The ground in the area is mostly made up of rocks and pebbles. If you see any greenery, it is likely due to a small river or stream that flows into the Khar-Us lake. Seen from Khovd, this is the closest.
Wildlife
On the shores of Khar Us Lake, there are mostly swampy spots and only in the north you can get to the lake through the reeds to watch swans, gulls, geese, cormorants, pelicans, cranes, birds of prey, ducks, and herons. There are around ten smaller and larger islands in the lake, which you can reach with your own rubber dinghy. For enthusiastic nature lovers, the effort of the transport is worthwhile, because bird watching in the middle of the lake is an unforgettable experience, but not recommendable due to the many mosquitos. Bathing is possible in summer, but not recommended because of the many mosquitos.
