Durgun Lake, a breathtaking salt lake located in the area of Durgun Sum of Khovd Province, is a true natural wonder. With an expansive area of 305 square kilometers, it is one of the largest lakes in the Gobi region. The lake is adjacent to Khar Lake, and it is connected to Khar Lake by the Khom channel and to the small intermediate Nogoon Lake by the Mergen channel.
The lake’s width spans 17 km, while its average width is 13 km, and its length is 24 km, making it an impressive sight to behold. Unlike other lakes, Durgun Lake has no islands, peninsulas, or bays, but its deepest part is 27 meters, with an average depth of 14.3 meters.
The condition of the shore of the lake is relatively barren and bumpy, but the west side of the lake features the foothills of the Jargalant Khairkhan, the branch mountains of the Altai Mountains, Tavan Khar Tal, and the foothills of the Seekh Mountains, creating a picturesque landscape.
If you love swimming, you’ll be pleased to know that Durgun Lake boasts a kilometer-long pebble and sandy beach on its southeastern shore, making it the perfect spot for a refreshing dip. Furthermore, if you drive east from Lake Durgon, you will reach the Zavkhan River, which meanders almost to the provincial capital of Altai. In the fertile river valleys, many nomadic family camps with their livestock can be found, adding to the area’s charm and cultural significance.
