The western Mongolia region is a stunningly diverse area consisting of five provinces – Bayan-Olgii, Uvs, Hovd, Gobi-Altai, and Zavkhan. This area is characterized by its high altitude, which results in a unique flora and fauna, unlike any other province. The climate is dry and hot, with vast stretches of Gobi steppe and mountainous regions of Altai. The Altai Mountain Range dominates the landscape of this region, and the presence of ancient historical monuments bears witness to the existence of early human civilization. The Uvs Lake basin and Ikh Nuuruudin Khotgor (Deppression of The Great Lakes) are home to most of the big lakes in Mongolia, making it a must-visit destination for tourists. The Altai Tavan Bogd, Kharhiraa Turgen, Tsambagarav, Otgontenger, and Sutai Khairkhan are some of the most majestic high mountains, with snow-capped peaks that will take your breath away. This region is also home to the largest number of ethnic tribes, each with their own unique language and dialect. When traveling in Western Mongolia, the main roads connecting the provinces are paved with asphalt, but the roads leading to the natural complexes are mostly dirt, making it best to take a 4-wheel drive car to explore the region fully.
